Community Treatment

There are four Pinewood Community Treatment offices within Durham Region: Ajax, Oshawa, Port Perry, and Bowmanville.

Formerly known as "outpatient services" Community Treatment Services include a range of services that are typically one to two hours per week. The majority of substance-related needs can be satisfied on an outpatient basis.

A variety of treatment options are available through the Community Treatment offices and include:

  • assessment and case management

  • educational and motivational workshops

  • individual support

  • skills-based groups (eg. stress management)

  • controlled-use groups

  • abstinence-based groups

  • relapse prevention and support groups

  • services for family members

Youth Services

Youth (13 - 18 years of age) are often uncertain about whether they have developed a substance abuse problem, and are frequently referred to Pinewood by parents, teachers, probation officers and other professionals.

One of the "core" youth services is called Dawn, which explores the risks of substance use and provides accurate information in a respectful, supportive and non-judgmental manner. This approach helps youth to openly discuss their patterns of substance use, assess consequences of their use, self-identify concerns and determine the need for change.

Individual and group-based services are also available for youth who have identified a specific treatment goal and are working towards reduction or abstinence.

Adult Services

There are several treatment options available for adult substance users. Initially, many people attend out "Pathways" program, a four session educational service that provides information about many aspects of substance use.

Clients are also offered a variety of skills-based group services, which address the reduction or abstinence of substance use, while enhancing life skills to maintain those identified areas of change. Acquired skills include:

  • refusal skills/urge-management

  • ability to identify high risk situations associated with substance use

Supportive group-based services are also available for those who have achieved their identified treatment goals and would benefit from relapse prevention-based support.

Family Members Services

Pinewood Centre offers services to those who are concerned with a family members substance use. The educational and treatment programs for both youth and adults are divided into the following areas:

  • coping with the substance use of a spouse or common-law partner

  • understanding involvement with substance use of today's youth and how to be supportive

  • supporting the concerns of youth who have been affected by a parent/guardian's substance use

Highlights of these services include:

  • roles and responsibility

  • substance use education

  • anger management

  • safety concerns

  • healthy coping skills
