| Eating Disorders Program |
The Eating Disorders Program provides services to residents of Durham Region and their families. It is an outpatient, multidisciplinary service specializing in the assessment and treatment of eating disorders. Participation in the program is voluntary. Our healthcare team includes a range of disciplines: psychology, nutrition and social work. A physician referral, medical assessment, and ongoing medical management are necessary for program participation.
The program espouses a non-dieting philosophy and promotes normalized eating. It provides services to individuals and families affected by anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Assessment and treatment are provided to adolescents aged 11-18 years and adults 18 years and over, and their families. All clients receive a multidisciplinary team assessment that includes a psychological assessment by a psychologist, nutrition assessment by the registered dietitian, and psychosocial/family assessment by the social worker. Following the completed team assessment, treatment recommendations and options are discussed with clients and their families on a case by case basis. The program primarily follows a group treatment model. Treatment services include group psychoeducation and psychotherapy, individual psychotherapy, nutrition counseling/therapy, and family therapy.
The Eating Disorders Program is not a weight loss program. In addition, the program does not accept referrals for individuals who have undergone bariatric surgery that would prohibit the consumption of full meals.
Once clients are referred, they are contacted for a brief screening evaluation, prior to being placed on the outpatient waiting list. The average waiting time for services varies but tends to be between 6 and 12 months.
