Inpatient Mental Health and Psychiatry

Lakeridge Health Oshawa is considered a Schedule 1 Mental Health facility, and individuals may be admitted on both a voluntary or involuntary basis.

Admission to Inpatient Mental Health Services occurs by a psychiatrist, mostly commonly after the individual has been assessed in the Emergency Department and seen by the Crisis Intervention Team on-site.

The purpose of inpatient admission is for assessment and stabilization of mental health issues and acute situational crises. The most common diagnoses and/or reasons for admission include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, concurrent disorders and others.

Each patient is actively involved in their mental healthcare decisions, and the treatment team which includes psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, hospitalists, addiction counselor (on site weekly), as well as community support workers to assist the client with a plan of care.

Discharge planning is provided to all patients, based on their individual needs. With permission, referrals may be provided to community mental health agencies, other health and social service organizations, and follow-up arrangements with physicians and psychiatrists as required.
